I have to admit, I must have been hiding under a rock because this was the first I have heard the song playing while I biking along Yonge St. during Open Streets Toronto this past weekend. The song was out almost all summer! I caught myself bobbing my head to it.
I was surprised when I heard it in the train and learned it was Bieber? As in Justin Bieber? (Cue Scooby Doo Reaction!!!) Yes! As much as I am not a big fan of his, I have to admit, the smooth vocals in this track reveal maturity to him that seems hidden in that spoiled brat-like behavior that has made him notorious in his home country, Beliebers excepted.
Skrillex and Diplo are simply a team of evil geniuses with the addictively up-tempo beats and instrumentation that contrast Bieber’s ballad-like vocals (who would have thought?!) Going through various rhythms while maintaining the same tempo, with rich thumping bass and tight high-hats. Mixing in a high pitched squealer resynthesized lick from Bieber (he sings, “I need you most…”) to use the harmonies as a key hook during the refrain – masterful!
This is just the tip of the iceberg for electronic dance. Expect more from this genre as it matures, and enjoy it while it lasts.
