It looks like the Playstation 4 will be doing more than play games and sharing gameplay videos. Users will be able to issue navigational commands via voice as well as be able to recognize your ugly mug all via the Playstation Camera. There’s a demo clip at the bottom from GameStop Expo 2013. The clip is a bit off the cuff but gets the point across.
One thing that comes to mind is whether the PS Camera will also exploit user privacy, but that’s for another article entirely. For now use this demo to make an informed decision.
Hey kids. So after a month or so of virtually nothing we finally get some little morsels of MGS news. This post will be a roundup if you will, of the current events that have happened thus far related to anything Metal Gear. Lets get to it.
It looks like NA isn’t the only region that will have gotten their hands on the Metal Gear Solid Legacy Collection (MGS LC for short). Europe will be the next recipient of this archived collection of past canonical* MGS titles. As with the NA release Europe will also be getting Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid (download), VR Missions (download), Metal Gear Solid 2 HD, Metal Gear Solid 3 HD, Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD, and the Metal Gear Solid and Metal Gear Solid 2 digital graphic novels. The art book will also accompany this collection and will be strictly for PS3 owners. I say the more the merrier. Everyone should get to enjoy MGS as a whole series. Though Xbox 360 owners will be left in the dark. At least they have the HD Collection, which also contains Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (more…)
Whether you’re a parent or not, gamers are all alike and we stick together to talk about one of our favorite past times: Gaming. For those who ARE gamers with little ones I’m sure it’s been hard to find time to pick up the controller for even a half hour session on the big screen. I’ve fallen into that category many a time at this point with my now 10.5 month old. He’s growing up fast, yet not fast enough. These are the times where I have to be crafty and squeeze in some time whenever and wherever I can. (more…)
VOLUME is an upcoming game announced by Thomas Was Alone creator Mike Bithell. It looks like a mix between a mobile game and very reminiscent of a bare bones Metal Gear Solid: VR Missions level. It’s a top-down game with stealth elements where the protagonist moves past enemy sentries while trying not to get spotted. Yep this definitely sounds like an MGS game. Compare the above announcement trailer with the VR Missions clip below.
One thing that does peak my interest about VOLUME is the apparent fact that gamers can actually create and share their own blocky levels. So it’s not only kinda MGS, but some Minecraft peppered in. I guess the only downside is that it is set to release in 2014. The upside is I have yet another game to look forward to in 2014. That speaks Volumes. AMIRITE?!
[In the spirit of Cheesecake‘s awesome Earworm posts I’d also like to offer something in the same vein that runs parallel to those cool tunes while simultaneously driving video games and other media. I’m talking about Original Sound Tracks.]
Today I’d like to offer you boys and girls a shiny penny in the world of Deus Ex (DX). In this case it’s the Deus Ex: Human Revolution (DXHR) OST. The clip above is actually the complete DXHR soundtrack. The entire OST sounds epic and immerses me in the DXHR world. If any of you are like me you get pulled into a game or movie (and show) with a great story And equally great music.
This just somehow fills my ears with feelings of a dystopian near future society froth with hidden conspiracies under the bright lights and desolate video game city which the DXHR locales are based on. It’s a perfect fit. Even if you haven’t played DXHR you’ll be enticed to perhaps pop the disc into your console or run the game in your preferred device just to see where the music fits in.
My personal favorite is the 1st track: Icarus. It’s the main theme of the game and prepares you for the rest of the OST that evokes the suggested themes and emotional tones of the game: cyberpunk conspiracy, human morality, dealing with whether or not to augment one’s self with cybernetic parts to somehow enhance one’s life, and whether individuals really have a choice at all in the matter. As we all know, choices come with their own consequences and its those those consequences and how characters deal with them that make for a good game and movie. Enjoy!!
So I got a chance to see PACIFIC RIM a few weeks ago. Giant robots fighting giant monsters? One word: Awesome! The escapist in me thoroughly enjoyed the movie from beginning to end. Every big action scene had me OOHing and AHHing at every turn. It was a welcome break from the mundane routine of life.
As I watched the movie I couldn’t help but imagine a Metal Gear Solid movie done in the same fashion, passion, and gusto. Hideo has mentioned being in talks with Avi Arad, producer of the famed Marvel Comics turned movies that everyone loves. Knowing this, and the fact that Hideo and Guillermo (director of Pacific Rim) have become quite close, it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for a real MGS movie to come to fruition. Seriously, Del Toro’s foray into giant robots and monsters was practically a live action outing of MGS Peace Walker‘s ‘Monster Hunter’ boss battles. We all know MH is a Capcom IP but still, those Kaiju look a massive as the MH monsters. Another thing relating PR to MGS: the fact that those giant robots are called Jaegers. Hello, Frank Jaeger anyone?! (more…)
So I stumbled on this iOS game called Bloodmasque. It’s an action RPG that let’s you take photos of your face (casual, pleased, angry) and plaster it on the main character to show the in-game emotions he or she is supposed to display on a given situation.
Needless to say, hilarity ensued in the first 10 minutes just by taking these shots!
[Having a chat with the local wenches.]
At least I won my first boss battle against a vampire demon!
DEUS EX Has been in my mind lately. So much so that I’ve been focusing on three out of the four of its iterations: DEUS EX Classic, DEUS EX: HUMAN REVOLUTION, and DEUS EX: THE FALL (hereafter referred to as DX, DXHR and DXTF).
Starting with DXHR, which is actually the first DX game I purchased during release, I became intrigued with its world and story as it ranks itself within the Cyber Punk genre, as with DX games in general. Judging from its trailers and gameplay demos it looked like something I’d want to immerse myself in. I did the usual thing that I do when I set myself up for a definite want and preordered DXHR. While waiting for this game to make to my doorstep other things occupied my time. Work, friends, family, and other games filled that time.
Once I did finally get DXHR I put it aside to finish other projects and games. DXHR stayed in the cut. Fast forward to now and it’s still unopened but has been on my mind, among my other games. Lately though, as recent as a few weeks ago, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix decided to release yet another DX outing, though in the mobile landscape, called DEUS EX: THE FALL (DXTF). The lot of DX fans were in an uproar because they would have rather had a full blown sequel on console. To those who did give this game a chance, as I have, will be pleasantly surprised. While I have yet to play DXHR I’ve watch enough gameplay clips to say that DXTF looks, and smells just like DXHR. I’ve been thoroughly enjoying this mobile fanfare since release and its been enticing me to crack open DXHR. I’ve read that much like DXHR, DXTF is also a prequel to the original DX, though it runs parallel with DXHR. The characters are from the novel DEUS EX: THE ICARUS EFFECT (DXIE). (more…)
Hey boys and girls. I know it’s been a while since I’ve written anything (yet again). Life anyways seems to take precedent but rest assured that content is forthcoming. One way I’ve chosen to remedy this is to add content in short bursts, either thru short ramblings or perhaps some app reviews in the form of short gameplay videos.
Since my last post I’ve been experimenting with ways to capture gameplay on my iOS device. I’ve come upon 3 apps: RecordMyScreen, Record Screen, and xRec. I’ll probably do a review on them in the near future but in order to save time and expedite this piece to you all ill just jump right into the first app I’ll take about for this article. Let’s get to it shall we?
Everyone knows the side scrolling space shooter R.TYPE. Or at least they should. This classic was released in arcade form in 1987, has made it to classic consoles, and has now made its way to mobile platforms, namely iOS. Having played it I feel that the lack of tangible controls really isn’t much of an issue with the inclusion of the option to have an autofire button. I was actually playing this on one hand while feeding my 10 month old so this options is a definite boon.
Gameplay wise R.TYPE still retains its fun factor and you can toggle difficulty settings in the menu. I played on Normal but got my butt whooped a handful of times, not because of control issues, but rather my skill level and trying to evade every friggin enemy and hail of bullets while being on the offensive, as my gameplay clip below demonstrates. (Apologies for the clip as there is no sounds. I have yet to fiddle with the screen recording apps).
No matter how you slice it, R.TYPE is definitely a great addition to any mobile device of your choosing. This lovely gem is available for iOS and Andy (my nickname for android, haha).
